Ratings: West Ham threaten Premier League record after Leeds loss as Nuno gets it all wrong again

West Ham United are flirting with a truly embarrassing Premier League record after yet another dire display and team selection from Nuno Espirito Santo at Leeds.

It may feel like it happened long ago, but the Hammers really do look set to hit rock bottom this weekend after a dreadful 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

A victory for Wolves over Burnley will leave West Ham bottom of the Premier League at the quarter-way stage of the season.

After a woeful 2-0 defeat at home to Brentford, West Ham found themselves needing a result at fellow strugglers Leeds on Friday night.

But it was different day, same old West Ham as this insipid, spineless, weak, pathetic shambles posing as a team found themselves 2-0 down after just 13 minutes at Elland Road.

Another pathetic West Ham shambles

Nuno Espirito Santo threw a number of curve balls when the Hammers lost to Brentford.

The Portuguese was heavily criticised for dropping the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Soungoutou Magassa and snubbing Callum Wilson while playing without a striker.

Then there was the decision out of nowhere to start Ollie Scarles and Andy Irving while playing the former out of position at right back.

It was expected Nuno would see sense and get as many of his best, most athletic players back in the team as possible.

But West Ham fans were once again left in shock by the starting line-up at Leeds.

Scarles once again started out of position at right wingback with Wan-Bissaka at centre-back.

There was no place for £40m summer signing Mateus Fernandes or £17m defensive midfielder Soungoutou Magassa.

And Nuno played with Lucas Paqueta as a false nine once more.

The Hammers looked lost, lifeless and completely out of ideas for the most part as Nuno got it wrong once again — here’s how every player rated in another nightmare performance.

West Ham threaten Premier League record as Nuno gets it all wrong again

West Ham are threatening an unwanted Premier League record after the Leeds loss.

Forget relegation, which is starting to look a certainty for the Hammers.

Because West Ham look like they are heading for the abyss with records tumbling.

Derby are officially the worst Premier League team ever having registered just 11 points in the 2007/8 season.

As things stand, West Ham are on course for just 16 points this season.

But the team is getting worse, not better.

So what is to say the Hammers will better Derby’s miserable tally that cemented their place in the Premier League history books for all the wrong reasons?

Southampton ran Derby close last season, getting just 12 points.

West Ham decided to sign two of their players and now wonder why things are going so wrong.

One of them, Fernandes, scored West Ham’s consolation when he did come on.

But that’s all it was, the Hammers were simply never at the races and will be hard-pressed to survive after their worst ever start to a top flight campaign.

There were very, very few positives for West Ham in the display at Elland Road.

The laughable £72m centre-back pairing of Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo stunk the place out as did Irving, who should be nowhere near a Premier League football pitch.

West Ham player ratings vs Leeds:

Alphonse Areola: 3/10, Ollie Scarles: 3/10, Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5/10, Jean-Clair Todibo: 3/10, Max Kilman: 3/10, El Hadji Malick Diouf: 4/10, Tomas Soucek: 4/10, Andy Irving: 3/10, Crysencio Summerville: 4/10, Jarrod Bowen: 6/10, Lucas Paqueta: 6/10.

Subs: Callum Wilson: 5/10, Mateus Fernandes: 7/10, Freddie Potts: 6/10, Soungoutou Magassa: 4/10, Kyle Walker-Peters: 5/10.

For those keeping track, West Ham United have now won just 17 of their last 67 Premier League matches since January 2024.
