Graham Potter in line for sensational return two weeks after West Ham axe but Rangers be warned

Graham Potter could be about to make a stunningly quick return to management with Rangers just two weeks after being sacked by West Ham.

It did not take long for Graham Potter to be linked with another job when he was axed by the Hammers.

Less than 24 hours after West Ham dismissed him, Potter was linked with the Man United job as pressure was building on Ruben Amorim.

That always appeared far-fetched but now the West Ham flop could be about to land a top job at a huge club in Rangers.

West Ham’s board made their minds up to sack Potter after the club’s 2-1 home defeat to Palace.

But they had to wait to get clearance from Nuno Espirito Santo before appointing the Portuguese a week later in what already looks a major upgrade.

Potter in line for Rangers job two weeks after West Ham axe?

The Daily Mail and Daily Record claim Potter has been sounded out by Rangers over taking the job at Ibrox following the sacking of Russell Martin.

Potter’s right-hand man at West Ham and other previous clubs is Scotsman Billy Reid.

It is claimed Potter is being considered by Rangers along with former West Ham star Gary O’Neil, who has been out of work since being sacked by Wolves.

O’Neil was also reportedly looked at by the Hammers before they appointed Nuno.

It comes after Glasgow giants Rangers snubbed ex West Ham boss Slaven Bilic when the Hammers opted against bringing the Croatian back to east London when Potter was sent packing.

But Rangers need to know what they are getting themselves into if they are seriously considering appointing Potter.

Like West Ham, Rangers have a massive, proud, passionate fanbase who demand certain things.

While the level of competition is clearly vastly inferior, at Rangers the pressure to win week in, week out is far greater than it is at West Ham.

So that should send shivers down the spines of Gers’ supporters – and set alarm bells ringing in the Ibrox boardroom – if they are going to appoint Potter.

After being chewed up and spat out by Chelsea, Potter picked up his millions in compensation for nearly two years before accepting the West Ham job.

It always looked an odd fit.

A so-called “project manager” coming into a club mid-season with ideas about completely changing the style.

Rangers be warned about West Ham’s worst ever

Rangers have been woeful under Martin, just as West Ham were under Julen Lopetegui.

Hammers supporters thought things could not get any worse, just as Rangers fans probably do right now.

But in the immortal words of Mick McCarthy: “It can”.

Potter somehow made West Ham even worse.

In eight months the Hammers won just six of his 25 games at the helm.

Only two of those victories came at home – meaning West Ham fans have witnessed their team win just twice at the London Stadium in 2025.

And people wonder why the fans are so angry?

Martin’s dismal record meant he officially goes down as the worst Rangers manager in history.

But in going for Potter, Rangers are now targeting the man who holds that same title at West Ham.

Hammers fans found Potter incredibly boring on and off the pitch as he repeated the same stock cliches and phrases in pre and post-match interviews and press conferences.

‘We have to do better, we have to stick together and be aligned’ were among Potter’s favourite lines to trot out on a weekly basis.

His dull as dishwater interviews were matched by the style of play and approach, although it is hard to actually put into words what that was, so lacking were his West Ham side in any identity.

West Ham flop Potter is the antithesis of what Rangers need

The man Rangers allegedly want as Martin’s replacement was dubbed a ‘PE teacher with a psychology degree’ by some West Ham fans.

Supporters were irritated by his lack of passion on the sideline and felt it was reflected in the team’s passive, insipid performances where they simply did not compete physically in most games.

That matched the frustration felt at his lack of ideas as Potter often stood arms folded, looking lost the moment West Ham conceded a goal, which they invariably did at an alarming rate of three per game under his tenure.

Potter may well be a project manager but you only get time to build a project by getting enough results along the way.

Rangers need someone who can get the club by the scruff of the neck and pull it out of the mire.

A bit like West Ham seem to have now with Nuno.

Rangers be warned, Graham Potter is not that man. In fact he is the antithesis of that.

The last time Rangers approached Potter in 2023, he turned them down.

Gers’ fans should be on their knees hoping he does the same again.
