Why has Moyes lost all faith in West Ham’s most reliable player for 10 years?

Why has David Moyes seemingly lost all faith in West Ham’s most reliable player of the last 10 years when they need him most?

That’s the question we are demanding be asked of the manager today regarding veteran West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna.

When Nayef Aguerd returned to West Ham from AFCON after a trademark error saw Morocco crash out, we stated that David Moyes should not recall him to the starting XI.

While results had not been great in 2024, West Ham’s defence had at least been working well – something Moyes had stated publicly himself.

Yet the Scot inexplicably brought Aguerd back in with Konstantinos Mavropanos making way despite being one of the Hammers’ best players of late.

The result? West Ham have shipped NINE goals in TWO games.

And Aguerd has been directly at fault for several of them with his meek, rash defending and lack of concentration.

At half-time Moyes hauled off captain Kurt Zouma. Nothing wrong with that. But Aguerd remained on the pitch. Why?

He too should have been dragged off and replaced by Ogbonna.

Ogbonna may be getting on but he has aged like a fine Italian wine.

Every time he has come into the West Ham team this season he has excelled and proved he can still do it.

Fine Italian wine left to ferment despite clear Aguerd failings

He is a leader and if it is balance Moyes is worried about with having a left-footed centre-back in the team, then Ogbonna ticks that box too.

We can’t recall too many big West Ham hidings with Ogbonna in the team.

Yet Moyes is refusing to use the man with nearly 250 Hammers appearances to his name since signing for a bargain £8.5m from Juventus in 2015.

Oggy is exactly what this team needs at the moment. A senior voice and someone more focused on defending than hitting aimless 70-yard diagonal passes up the pitch.

Do you think Ogbonna would let players walk around him as Aguerd has been doing?

Instead the manager has created a situation where Ogbonna will be coming in completely out of the cold now given his lack of involvement this season.

Oggy must start at Forest

Players who play well should keep the shirt. But each time Ogbonna has come in and shone – as he almost always does – he has then been dropped.

When asked about Ogbonna’s lack of game time by an Italian journalist after West Ham’s defeat to Man United, Moyes looked almost offended.

And he offered a pathetic response, stating: “He’s getting older now.”

But in the same breath Moyes also admitted he is one player he can always rely on.

Well put him in the side then Moyes – he is what West Ham need right now. The Hammers would not have conceded many of those goals against Arsenal with Ogbonna at the back.

He simply must start against Nottingham Forest next weekend.

The major positive from West Ham hiding to Arsenal.

West Ham were hit by training ground problem ahead of Arsenal claims Moyes.

Huge £50m favour Arsenal did West Ham becomes clear.
