Paul Merson has questioned why one West Ham United player is not starting games right now.
The well-renowned football pundit absolutely slaughtered some of the Hammers players for their poor performances yesterday, with Nayef Aguerd bearing the brunt of his criticism.
David Moyes would have been fuming with his players but the Scot has to shoulder a lot of the blame as well.
Merson has explained why he thought it was strange that Phillips didn’t start the match…

Paul Merson says West Ham player will be baffled he’s not starting games
The Sky Sports pundit was a guest in the studio yesterday for the London derby.
And Merson suggested that Phillips will be wondering what on earth is going on having moved to West Ham from Man City in order to play regularly, when speaking on Sky Sports (Sunday February 11th, 1:47pm):
“He’s got to get in the team now, he’s just come from Man City on loan. Now he’s sub! I’d be sitting there asking, ‘why am I sub for West Ham?’. That’s no disrespect to the other players but there are some players in there who he should be playing in front of.”
Now, Phillips did start against Bournemouth on February 1st, but he’s had to make do with a place on the bench for our last two games.
He does actually look miles off the pace physically, but it begs the question, why did Moyes sign him in the first place. It could be argued that Moyes should have signed a striker, a left winger, a centre-back and a right-back before he even considered signing Phillips.
Paul Merson suggested that Kalvin Phillips will be shocked that he’s not starting games ahead of certain West Ham players and I must admit, I am as well! Hopefully he forces his way into the team soon at the expense of Soucek.
