Journalist says Man United want to hijack West Ham move for striker

A journalist says Man United want to hijack a West Ham move for striker Timo Werner and it would be doing them a big favour.

West Ham are looking to sign a striker in the January transfer window and have been linked with the likes of Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.

But it seems the Hammers and Man United have a mutual interest in signing Timo Werner too.

The likes of 90min claimed Werner is interesting West Ham and other London clubs.

We reported on Hammers News that German sources have confirmed the club’s interest in signing Werner in less than five weeks’ time.

And Hammers News also reported on claims from Germany that Real Madrid were rivalling West Ham for Werner. Now Manchester United have emerged as a potential shock destination too.

When it comes to transfer rumours, it’s difficult for fans to know what to believe.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has confirmed Man United’s interest.

And he says the Red Devils have already made contact with RB Leipzig about signing the German striker in the winter window.

“News on Timo Werner, he’s on the list of Man United for (the) winter!” Plettenberg said.

“Manchester United has already inquired about him. No offer or negotiations yet.

“Real Madrid, not hot (on him). Werner, not satisfied with his situation in Leipzig but the players tendency at this stage is to stay at least until summer. One to watch in the next weeks.”

The prospect of signing Werner has sparked debate among West Ham fans as to whether it would be a wise move for a player who ended up as a Premier League laughing stock at Chelsea.

Before the links to Man United, TeamTalk claimed Werner could prefer a move to West Ham after they guaranteed knockout European football in the new year for a third consecutive season.

But Man United boss Erik ten Hag may end up doing the Hammers a massive favour on this one.

Signing a 27-year-old with a poor goalscoring record in recent seasons who has already flopped in the Prem seems very unwise.

It also screams of a West Ham transfer of old with the club’s recruitment philosophy improving markedly since the arrival technical director Tim Steidten in the summer.

As far as most West Ham fans would be concerned, Man United are welcome to Werner.
