‘When it’s concrete, I’ll hear about it’: Manager responds to claim his player could join West Ham

Steven Bergwijn has been linked with a move to West Ham United from Ajax in the January transfer window.

West Ham boss David Moyes is keen to bring Steven Berjwijn to the London Stadium in the January transfer window, and the player himself refused to rule out the switch just a couple of days ago.

The Hammers desperately need more cover across the front-line, with Mohammed Kudus, Said Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet all potentially AFCON bound at the end of this year.

Bergwijn would be a really interesting option for us. Sure, he really struggled at Spurs but he’s been in fine form with Ajax over the past 15 months or so.

As far as I’m concerned, the Netherlands international would be a major upgrade on Benrahma, and he’d provide really strong cover and competition in the right wing and centre-forward departments.

Is he a realistic signing for us though, and has Ajax boss John van ‘t Schip actually heard anything about the links?

Ajax boss responds to West Ham links with Steven Bergwijn

Bergwijn has been heavily linked with a move away from the Dutch giants in the January window.

And John van ‘t Schip responded directly when asked whether Bergwijn could join West Ham this winter, as quoted by Football Oranje:

“I haven’t heard anything about it. It’s probably the case. But when it really becomes concrete, I will hear about it. I assume that Steven will stay with us, certainly until the end of the season. And if a huge offer comes in, you know how it works. But I would prefer if he stays.”

That’s very interesting indeed.

By the sounds of it, Ajax will definitely be open to selling him if a big offer comes in. So would does a ‘big’ offer mean?

Well, we paid £35 million for Edson Alvarez (Sky Sports) and £38 million for Mohammed Kudus (Daily Mail) – both signed from Ajax.

So I reckon that if West Ham offer anywhere north of £25 million for Steven Bergwijn, Ajax will definitely be tempted into selling him.

Only time will tell I guess.
